Alaïa was founded in 1979 by Azzedine Alaïa, a Tunisian-born designer of Tunisian-Italian heritage whose obsessive technical precision and reverence for the female body made him the 'King of Cling' of 1980s couture.
Alaïa died in 2017 without an heir; his foundation took over the maison. Pieter Mulier, the Belgian designer who had been Raf Simons's right hand at Dior, Calvin Klein, and Jil Sander, took over as creative director in 2021. His five years have made Alaïa one of the most-discussed houses in fashion again.

Azzedine Alaïa was born in Tunis in 1939 (his exact birth year was always disputed). He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tunis, then moved to Paris in 1956 — first as a Dior pattern cutter, briefly. He spent twenty years dressing private clients out of a small Paris flat — including Greta Garbo, Cecile de Rothschild, Marie-Hélène de Rothschild — before launching his own label in 1979.
Alaïa's design language was singular: stretch, fit, the body sculpted by fabric rather than draped in it. He worked with new technical knits and leather that no other couture house was using. By the mid-1980s he was the most-discussed designer in Paris — Tina Turner, Naomi Campbell, Grace Jones became muses. He refused the fashion calendar, shown shows when he was ready rather than on schedule, and ran his maison out of a converted Marais bookbinder's atelier.
Alaïa died in November 2017, aged 77. He had no immediate family. His longtime partner, the painter Christoph von Weyhe, and the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation took over stewardship. For three years the maison continued with archive-only collections.
Mulier, a Belgian designer who had been Raf Simons's right hand at Dior, Calvin Klein, and Jil Sander, was appointed creative director in 2021. His brief: continue Azzedine's body-sculpting language for a modern generation. Five years in, his couture-adjacent ready-to-wear has made Alaïa one of the most-discussed houses in Paris again.
