Through Bonnie Cashin's design tenure (1962-1974), Reed Krakoff's rebuild (1996-2014), and Stuart Vevers's revival (2014-present), Coach has remained the defining American accessible-luxury brand. Tapestry (parent company) owns Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman alongside Coach.

Coach was founded in 1941 by Lillian and Miles Cahn — leather glove makers who pivoted into wallets and small leather goods through the 1940s and 1950s. The early business was wholesale, supplying private-label leather goods to department stores.
Bonnie Cashin, the pioneering American sportswear designer, joined Coach in 1962 as the first designer to put a name on a Coach product. Over twelve years she introduced the brass turnlock closure, the brand's signature, and turned Coach into a recognised American leather-goods house. She left in 1974.
Reed Krakoff joined Coach as creative director in 1996 when the brand was tired and unfashionable. Over eighteen years he transformed it into a premium accessible-luxury brand and led the 2000 IPO. Coach became one of America's biggest accessory businesses under his watch.
Stuart Vevers, formerly of Loewe and Mulberry, took over as creative director in 2014 with the brief to revive Coach culturally. The Tabby (2019), the Brooklyn Tote (2022), and the brand's collaborations with artists (Tom Wesselmann, Disney, Schott NYC) have repositioned it as a fashion-credible brand alongside its commercial mainstream.
