Dolce & Gabbana
A Heritage Essay

Dolce & GabbanaThe House & Its Designers

Sicilian widows, religious imagery, and the most theatrical luxury house in Milan.

An Introduction

Dolce & Gabbana is fashion's most operatic house — leopard print, religious iconography, the Sicilian black widow, the Madonna and the priest, all rendered with the precision of Milanese couture.

Founded in 1985 by Domenico Dolce, a tailor's son from Polizzi Generosa in Sicily, and Stefano Gabbana, a graphic designer from Milan, the maison has built its forty-year identity around the Italian South — its mothers, its saints, its bandits.

The House

Founded 1985.

Two designers in Milan.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana met in 1980 working at the same Milan atelier. Within five years they had launched their first womenswear collection at Milan Fashion Week — a presentation titled 'Real Women.' The breakthrough came with Spring 1986 (the 'Sicilian Widows' collection) and the 1990 menswear debut. By the mid-1990s they were dressing Madonna, Isabella Rossellini, Monica Bellucci.

The Sicily bag.

The Sicily bag — top-handled, structured, with the heart-shaped DG plaque — was introduced in 2009 and became the brand's first true It-bag. Inspired by the silhouette of a Sicilian widow's handbag, it crystallised a decade of mythology the maison had built around its founding region. It remains the brand's bestseller.

Alta Moda.

Alta Moda.

In 2012 the maison launched Alta Moda — a haute couture line shown only by private invitation at locations across Italy (Capri, Palermo, Naples, Portofino, Venice). The events combine fashion show, gala dinner, and Italian tourist board for the maison's top clients. Alta Moda has helped reposition D&G as a serious couture house even as the diffusion lines have grown.

The Designers

Founders / Creative Directors · 1985 — present

Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana

Forty years at the helm of the same house — a tenure matched only by Armani and Lagerfeld in modern Italian fashion. The duo's design partnership has survived the dissolution of their personal relationship in 2005 and multiple public controversies. Their aesthetic — Sicily, Catholicism, Italian-American glamour, leopard, lace — has remained remarkably consistent for four decades.
