FerragamoThe House & Its Designers

The shoemaker to the stars who built a maison from Florence.

An Introduction

Salvatore Ferragamo was twelve years old when he opened his first shoemaker's shop. He was forty when he made his first pair of shoes for Marilyn Monroe.

Founded in 1927 in Florence after Ferragamo's return from California, the maison has been continuously family-owned since his death in 1960. Under Maximilian Davis, hired in 2022 as Creative Director, the house has been repositioned around its founder's archive rather than its modern bag business.

The boy who walked to Hollywood.

Salvatore Ferragamo was born in 1898 in Bonito, a tiny village in Avellino. He apprenticed himself to a shoemaker at nine, opened his own shop at twelve, and emigrated to America at sixteen. He worked in a Boston shoe factory and then moved to California — Santa Barbara first, then Hollywood. He opened a custom shoe shop on Hollywood Boulevard. Within a few years he was making shoes for the silent film stars: Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo.

Florence.
1927

Florence.

In 1927 Ferragamo returned to Italy and opened a workshop in Florence — the city he had chosen for its craft tradition. Through the 1930s he invented or popularised the wedge sole, the cage heel, the invisible sandal, the cork platform. He patented over three hundred designs in his lifetime. By the 1950s the Florence atelier was producing for Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe, and the Duchess of Windsor.

Family.
1960 — 2018

Family.

Salvatore died in 1960. His wife Wanda and their six children took over and kept the maison family-owned for the next sixty years. They expanded into ready-to-wear, leather goods, fragrance, eyewear. The Ferragamo silk scarf and the Vara pump (1978) became standalone icons of Italian luxury.

Maximilian Davis.

Maximilian Davis.

Maximilian Davis, a young British designer of Caribbean heritage, was hired in 2022 to reset the maison's aesthetic for a younger generation. He stripped the brand back to its Florentine archive — the wedge heel, the colour red (Salvatore's favourite), the leather craft. The new Hug bag (2022) and the Studio bag are his early statements.

The Designers

1 era of creative direction.

Maximilian Davis

Davis, formerly of Grace Wales Bonner's studio, was a surprise appointment. His three years at Ferragamo have been about reduction — fewer logos, more sculptural shape, archive-grounded references. His Hug bag (2022) and Studio bag established his accessories language.
