Marc Jacobs founded his own label in 1986. His infamous 'Grunge' collection for Perry Ellis in 1992 got him fired — the look of thrift-store flannel and broomstick skirts was too underground for the brand's customer. The collection became a defining moment of early-90s fashion.
Marc Jacobs was appointed creative director of Louis Vuitton in 1997. Over seventeen years he introduced ready-to-wear to the maison, commissioned Stephen Sprouse (Graffiti, 2001), Takashi Murakami (Multicolore, 2003), and Yayoi Kusama (Dots, 2012). He left in 2014 to focus on his own brand.
Marc Jacobs continues to design his own label out of New York. In May 2026, WHP Global / G-III acquired the Marc Jacobs brand from LVMH — the maison's first ownership change in twenty-eight years.
