Miuccia Prada launched Miu Miu in 1993, fifteen years after taking over Prada from her grandfather. She framed it as the impulsive, less serious sister to Prada — named for her own childhood nickname. The early collections were more playful, more youthful, with bolder colour and looser tailoring than Prada's intellectual minimalism.
Miu Miu became the It-bag brand of the Y2K period — the Bow Bag (2010), the Coffer (2007), and the original Bowling Bag silhouettes were carried by Sienna Miller, Mary-Kate Olsen, and Kate Moss. By the mid-2010s the brand had moved its runway shows from Paris (where Prada shows) to a separate slot, becoming its own commercial and cultural entity.
Miu Miu's Spring 2022 collection was the most-talked-about Milan show of the year. The styling — low-rise schoolgirl miniskirts paired with grandfather-style cardigans, knee socks, and ballet flats — became the defining street-style aesthetic of 2022 and 2023. The Wander Matelassé bag debuted in the same collection. Miu Miu became Lyst's #1 brand of 2023, ahead of Prada itself.
Miu Miu now contributes nearly a third of the Prada Group's annual revenue. The Wander, the Arcadie, and the Madras leather have made the brand a billion-dollar business in its own right. Miuccia continues to design both Prada and Miu Miu, with a clear distinction in tone between the two houses.
