The House & Its Designers

Stella McCartney

London · 2001

A fashion house that made material choice part of its identity.

Stella McCartney founded her label with a commitment to avoiding leather and fur. Its bags show how hardware, shape and texture can create a recognisable object without traditional animal leather.

01 / The house

The story behind the name.

2001

An independent design voice

After leading Chloé, McCartney launched her own label. Tailoring and an interest in the environmental implications of materials developed together.

2009

The Falabella

The Falabella used a soft body and a distinctive chain border. Its construction made a non-leather bag a recognisable fashion object in its own right.

The materials

Continuing experiments

The house has explored recycled fibres and alternative materials. Each product’s composition still needs to be read individually; a material claim is not a blanket measure of environmental impact.

02 / The designers

The people who shaped the house.

Selected creative chapters; dates distinguish appointments from runway debuts.
