Stella McCartney
A Heritage Essay

Stella McCartneyThe House & Its Designers

Sustainable luxury; daughter of Paul, vegetarian since birth.

An Introduction

Stella McCartney launched her eponymous label in 2001, after four years as creative director of Chloé.

Vegetarian since birth, McCartney has refused to use leather, fur, or feathers across the brand's history — making it the first luxury house to commit to a fully vegetarian, no-animal-product position.

The House

Founded 2001.

Chloé.
1995 — 2001

Chloé.

Stella McCartney joined Chloé at 25, two years after graduating from Central Saint Martins (her graduate collection had been modelled by Naomi Campbell, Yasmin Le Bon, and Kate Moss — friends from her family network). Her four years at Chloé brought the maison back from near-dormancy to commercial relevance, anchored by her boho-feminine design language.

Stella McCartney, the brand.
2001 — present

Stella McCartney, the brand.

McCartney launched her own label in 2001 in a joint venture with Gucci Group (later Kering). She has been vegetarian since birth and the brand has refused to use leather, fur, or feathers throughout its history — the first luxury house to make such a commitment. The Falabella bag (2009) became the brand's commercial anchor.

Independent.
2018 — present

Independent.

Stella McCartney bought back her brand from Kering in 2018, making it fully independent. LVMH took a minority stake in 2019. The brand has continued to anchor its identity around sustainability, vegetarianism, and the Falabella.

The Designers

1 era of creative direction.

Founder · 2001 — present
