The Price of Status: Luxury Bags Have Outpaced Inflation Every Year Since 2019
A Chanel Classic Flap Medium cost $4,900 in 2015. It costs $11,500 today. The maths of luxury bag inflation, told through six data points.

If you bought a Chanel Classic Flap Medium in 2015, you paid $4,900. The same bag, same lambskin, same hardware, costs $11,500 in 2026. That's a 135% increase over eleven years — an annualised rate of about 8% — at a time when US consumer-price inflation averaged 2.5%.
Chanel is the loudest example but not the only one. We pulled the publicly verified retail prices for six iconic bags from our catalog and ran the numbers. The pattern is consistent: luxury houses are pricing well ahead of inflation, every year, and the spread is widening.
The data, six bags, eleven years
We picked one canonical bag per house: the Chanel Classic Flap Medium, the Hermès Birkin 30 Togo, the Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM, the Dior Lady Medium, the Gucci Marmont Medium, and the Bottega Veneta Cassette. All six were in continuous production from 2015 to 2026. Here is how the US-dollar retail prices moved:
Chanel Classic Flap Medium: $4,900 → $11,500 (+135%). Hermès Birkin 30 Togo: $11,800 → $12,900 (+9%, the outlier). Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM: $1,180 → $2,030 (+72%). Dior Lady Medium: $4,200 → $7,200 (+71%). Gucci Marmont Medium: $2,490 → $2,980 (+20%). Bottega Cassette: $2,950 → $3,550 (+20%).
"The Birkin is the only bag on this list that has held its retail price near flat. It is also the only bag with a wait list."
Why Chanel is the outlier
Chanel raised prices six times in 2020 and 2021 alone. The official reasoning was 'raw materials' and 'production costs.' The actual mechanism appears to be a deliberate strategy: by pushing the Classic Flap toward Birkin territory, Chanel reframed it from 'aspirational luxury' to 'investment piece' — language the brand started using in its own communications around 2022.

The result is that a Classic Flap Medium now sits in the same price bracket as a Hermès Constance — which two decades ago would have been considered the more exclusive bag. The Constance has appreciated 40% over the same window; the Flap appreciated 135%.
Hermès, the reverse case
Hermès raised Birkin prices roughly once per year, with each increase in the 2–4% range. Cumulatively, that's about a 9% lift over eleven years. The house's wait-list system means demand is structurally capped: no point pricing aggressively when you can't fulfil orders at the current price. The bag itself has appreciated on the resale market by 60–80% over the same period, but that gain accrues to flippers, not Hermès.

What it means for buyers
Three observations. First, if you're considering a Chanel Classic Flap, the 8% annualised retail increase has stabilised — the 2024 and 2025 hikes were each under 4%. The bag is likely overpriced relative to peer maisons but unlikely to drop. Second, for buyers thinking of a Hermès Birkin or Kelly, retail price increases are negligible; the real cost is the time and relationship investment to get one. Third, on the LVMH side (Louis Vuitton, Dior), the canvas-based bags have meaningfully outpaced the leather ones — the Neverfull and the Dior Book Tote have both crossed the $2,000 mark.
All prices in this piece are pulled from our live catalog and verified against the brand sites where possible. Where official prices aren't published (Chanel and Hermès, primarily), we cross-reference BragMyBag, PurseBop, and Cocoapproved against community-sourced 2026 boutique prints.
