We tracked the Hermès Birkin 30 Togo across 15 regions. The cheapest market is 18% cheaper than the most expensive — even after duties.
A Hermès Birkin 30 Togo costs $12,900 in the United States. It also costs €10,400 in France, £9,600 in the UK, ¥1,500,000 in Japan, AED 53,000 in Dubai, and HK$98,000 in Hong Kong. Converted to US dollars at today's exchange rates and adjusted for VAT refunds, the cheapest market is about $1,500 less than the most expensive. The arbitrage opportunity is real — but only if you know where to look and what you're trading off.
Why the same bag has different prices
Luxury houses set prices per region rather than uniformly. The reasoning is a mix of currency hedging, tax structures, import duties, and what each market will bear. France is typically the cheapest because the brands are French and the corporate tax structure favors domestic sales. The US is more expensive because the houses build in tariff buffers. Japan and the Gulf states sit between the two.

The hidden costs
Sticker price isn't the full picture. Four things to factor in: VAT refunds (available to non-residents in the EU, UK, Switzerland; usually 7–12% back after paperwork), import duty on the way home (US customs charges 9% on leather goods over $800, plus possible state tax), travel costs (a Paris weekend isn't free), and the wait-list problem (Hermès doesn't sell Birkins to walk-ins, so 'just fly to Paris' is rarely an option).
The honest math, US buyer, Paris purchase
Imagine a US-based buyer ready to spend $12,900 in the US. The Paris price is €10,400 (~$11,300). After the 7.5% détaxe refund, the effective price drops to ~$10,540. On entry back to the US, the buyer declares the bag and pays 9% duty on anything over the $800 personal exemption — that's about $880 in duty. Final all-in: ~$11,420. Savings vs the US price: about $1,480. Round-trip Paris from New York runs $700–$1,200 in shoulder season. Net win: small but real, assuming you'd already have travel plans or you can secure a Birkin appointment, which is the actual hard part.
Where this matters more
The arbitrage on a Birkin is real but capped because the bag is hard to buy in the first place. The same logic on bags that ARE available — Louis Vuitton Capucines, Chanel Coco Handle, Hermès Picotin or Garden Party — produces savings of $400–$1,200 with no wait list. For non-Hermès bags, Japan is consistently the cheapest market for non-residents because of the duty-free shopping program for tourists at Mitsukoshi, Isetan, and the major airports.
